Jamal Khashoggi Writes Of "The Arab Collapse" But Cannot Allow Himself To Mention Islam
Jamal Khashoggi here.
Families, communities, societies, states suffused with Islam exhibit similar features. Aggression, violence, an inability to compromise, an inability to think logically or to exhibit the kind of skepticism that keeps the level of conspiracy-theorizing within manageable limits, the inculcated hatred of all others, that is non-Muslims of every kind -- these are some of the distinguishing features.
Jamal Khashoggi recognizes that there is something terribly wrong with Arab societies and states. But he cannot discuss Islam, cannot allow himself even to hint at beginning to understand the effect of Islam -- whether on the True Believer, or on those who must pretend to be True Believers, or on those who are confused about Islam and are unable to comprehend how Islam explains the many failures, political, economic, social, intellectual, and moral, of their own societies and states. So Khashoggi, recognizing the degringolade, finds himself at a dead end, unable to diagnose the disease or to prescribe remedites, which would mean constraining Islam, weakening its hold over the minds of its adherents. And the violence, the conspiracy-theories, the hatred of non-Muslims -- there is no end to this.
