Which Is Stronger, Democracy or Islam?

by Robert Wolfe (May 2013)

For a long time now I have been saying that the long term survival and growth of Israel depends in large measure on the gradual democratization of the political culture of the Arab and Muslim world. As if to confound me there have been a series of pro-democracy uprisings in the Arab world - the so-called “Arab Spring” - whose main result has been to greatly enhance the power and prestige of the manifestly anti-democratic and anti-Semitic Muslim Brotherhood. In particular there now appears a strong possibility that the overthrow of the Mubarak regime in Egypt will lead to the establishment of an even more repressive Islamist dictatorship supported by the majority of the Egyptian people. Having come to power through a pro-democracy uprising leading to democratic elections, the Muslim Brotherhood now seems poised to perpetuate its rule for a long time to come.  more>>>

Hard to argue with anything here, except the hint of optimism. If anyone is keeping score, starting with 1979, the anti-democratic forces within the Ummah are winning. Somehow we have come to believe that comity and commerce will overcome religious zeal. Such folly may itself may be a triumph of wishful thinking.

Mr. Wolfe, your assertion that the inevitable failures-moral, political, economic-of the Islamist regimes will mean a collapse of Islamist forms of government. I truly wish this were so. However, experience shows the primitive mindset of Muslim peoples will mean they may blame particular individuals or regimes for there many woes, but never confront the true source of their monumental failings: Islam itself. No doubt , most of the blame will fall on the "Zionists", or the U.S., or the Western world in general- much akin to the situation we see presently. Until Muslims jettison the mental baggage of the ideology of Islam, continued catastrophic failure is virtually guaranteed. For our part, the Western(i.e., non-Muslim world) must brace ourselves to defend the values of human rights and democracy that are presumably our ideological inheritence. Be forewarned: The level of consciousness of Muslim dominated lands is at such a low level, we could be talking about hundreds, if not thousands of years.
